In my younger days, back when dinosaurs roamed the earth, I was a surfer dude. I lived in California and was only 45 minutes from the beach and some of the best surfing anywhere. On weekends you could find me in Santa Cruz surfing and hanging out with friends at the beach, Those were the days. However, my surfing days are now over, I'm older and that California beach water seems to be much colder then when I was a kid. Plus I now live in Texas and the nearest beach is about a hour and a half drive from here, and is all beach break, so there really isn’t any good surfing in Texas. (unless) So if you are a surfer and live in a land lock area or state, where do you go? what do you do?
Well I have found 3 places you could try, 2 you can find everywhere, the 3rd is new and might be a bit hard to find right now. The first option is to find a water park with a wave machine. Most states have a water park, but not all parks have a wave machine. These wave machines generate a constant wave. However, most are limited in space which won't let you do to much fancy stuff and are normally very crowed, so you are limited on your time to ride.
The second option is what they call "River Surfing". Every state has rivers so finding a river is not a big deal, but finding one you can surf can be a bit tricky. This type of surfing is fairly new and can be a lot of fun. Rivers can be a great place to practice surfing and just enjoying a day on the river with family and friends.
The 3rd option is fairly new and not everyone has one just yet, but I wanted to share it with you. What if I told you that there are man made lakes built for surfers, what would you think? When I heard it I thought "Yea right". Well it's true and they are starting to pop up all over the world. Just think of it, you could surf in Kansas, Ohio, any place. I can't wait to check one out. here are a few pictures of lake surfing.
Yes, they do look like giant wave pools, but they can produce waves from 8 to 10 feet high, and for surfers that the perfect ride.
Bottom line is very simple "Surfs up everywhere for everyone", lets hang 10 dude.
